Developments in Irlam ran pretty much as expected, with Labour councilor Roger Jones - Chair of the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive - losing his seat to the dubious Community Action Party, following a campaign which attempted to take advantage of opposition to the proposed Greater Manchester congestion charge. Worryingly for Labour, they were beaten into third by the Tories. Where has this Conservative support come from Irlam? Have people already forgotten what happened to this area in the early 1980s when manufacturing disappeared and half our school leavers went immediately onto the dole, under a Conservative government seeking vengeance on the working class?
