Thickening Plot

Michael Fahy: Jones blames Peel for voters' wrath
But c-charge anger ultimately caused loss of office

Roger Jones, the former chair of the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities (AGMA) and until recently the figurehead of its bid for £1bn Transport Innovation Fund cash (which includes the controversial road pricing scheme), appeared on Radio Four's You & Yours this week discussing what he clearly feels was an unfair, if ultimately successful, campaign to oust him from his Salford council seat during the local elections earlier this month.
Jones believes that Peel broke election rules by exceeding the amount that can be spent either promoting or disparaging campaign candidates. “There is absolutely no doubt over what Peel has done. The firm they hired asked people about the congestion charge and if they were opposed to it, told them that a vote for me would be a mistake as I was a champion of the congestion charge,” he said.
